The focus of Pharmacy Week (5-11 September 2011) is on quality, i.e.
a measure of excellence! The theme for this year “Pharmacy –
towards quality care together” has a concerted focus on quality
(the care and service any patient is entitled to receive from
their pharmacist) and teamwork (between a pharmacist and a
patient). In their deliberations the SA Pharmacy Council, the
Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa and the National
Department of Health welcomed Management Sciences for Health:
Strengthening Pharmaceutical Systems (SPS) as a partner in the
promotion of the role of the pharmacist.
The practical meaning of quality pharmaceutical service is
unpacked for both the professional and patient during this
important week in the national health calendar. It means in
short that the right medicines are available to the right
patient, in the right dosage form and the right quantities, and
are taken correctly at the right time. In ensuring this, and
providing information about the medicine, the pharmacist
minimises the risk of harm due to a medicine. Medicine, if
used correctly, can not only improve health but can even save
lives. Who better than the pharmacist to advise consumers on
medicine, help the patient to know their medicine and not to
waste it, but to use it safely and responsibly?
This is not the only quality service offered by pharmacists –
early diagnosis and treatment often occurs because a pharmacist
has been involved in screening for health risks. Pharmacists are
also a source of valuable information on health matters, and for
advice on making healthy lifestyle choices. Above all, pharmacy
is a caring profession – ask any patient who relies on his or
her pharmacist for pharmaceutical care.
Pharmacy Council and its partners in this campaign have no
hesitation in urging consumers to ask their pharmacist about
their medicine, different health conditions and treatment
options, healthy living and access to other health services! We
know that pharmacists are willing and able to provide much
needed services and together with the patient can ensure quality
care together.
Posters and flyers will be printed and distributed nationwide.
Every pharmacy professional is requested to be the visible
evidence of this message in their daily interactions with valued
patients, and to make the most of every communication
opportunity to educate and inform consumers about pharmacy.
